Paint quantity: separate area, coats, coverage, and waste
A transparent estimate that begins with wall area and keeps product coverage, coat count, and site loss as separate inputs.
Paint quantity should not be derived from floor area alone. Start with the actual wall perimeter and ceiling height, then state every deduction and allowance.
Begin with unfolded wall area
For a rectangular room, the area of all four walls is the room perimeter multiplied by ceiling height: 2 x (length + width) x height. Add length x width if the ceiling will receive the same system. Sloping ceilings, partial-height finishes, and deep beams should be broken into simpler shapes and calculated separately.
A room 4.2 m long, 3.6 m wide, and 2.7 m high has 42.12 square metres of gross wall area. That figure has not yet deducted openings, added coats, or accounted for how the paint behaves on the substrate. It is the geometric starting point, not a purchase quantity.
Deduct only surfaces that will not be painted
Large windows, full-height fitted cabinets, tile fields, and wall panelling can be deducted. Tiny openings are often left in the gross area because reveals, cutting-in, roller loading, and touch-up still consume paint. Either method can support a planning estimate, but record which one you used.
Calculate different colours separately. Leftover white paint cannot cover a shortage in a dark feature colour, and every colour may require its own package rounding. Primer should also be calculated as a separate product because its coverage and coat count may differ from the finish paint.
Coverage and coat count are independent
Manufacturer coverage is usually stated as square metres per litre per coat. The theoretical volume is net paint area multiplied by the number of coats, divided by the stated coverage. A porous substrate, dramatic colour change, rough texture, or spray application can move real usage away from that published figure.
Use the technical sheet for the exact product you intend to buy. A generic default is useful for comparing early options, not for overruling a product specification or the condition of the wall.
Add site loss once, then round to packages
Site loss covers material left in trays and rollers, cutting-in, rough surfaces, and a modest amount for later touch-up. A regular room with one colour may need less allowance than a small room with many corners and several colours. There is no universal percentage that describes every job.
Apply the allowance to the theoretical volume, then round up to available pack sizes. Keep the batch and colour reference with any sealed remainder. Matching a small repair from the original batch is usually easier than recreating the colour years later.
Know when quantity is not the real problem
Chalking, damp, mould, flaking, and widespread hollow patches require investigation before a paint order. More finish paint will not correct a failing substrate. Product compatibility, drying conditions, and preparation may matter more than the nominal litres.
Use the estimate to compare budgets and question a quotation. Before ordering, send the dimensions, deductions, coverage rate, expected coats, and waste allowance to the supplier or decorator so any difference can be traced to a specific assumption.

Verification boundaryReplace the planning coverage with the exact product data sheet. Confirm substrate condition, colour change, application method, and whether primer is a separate system before ordering.
