Will the furniture fit? A doorway is only one constraint

Find the transport dimensions

Retail dimensions often describe the furniture in use, not the packaged object carried through the building. Legs, doors, cushions, or backs may be removable. Packaging and corner protection may make the delivery size larger than the bare item. Ask for the number of packages and the external length, width, height, and weight of each one.

Treat glass, stone, and rigid timber as non-compressible. Do not assume a soft sofa can be forced through a tight opening unless the manufacturer or delivery team confirms the allowable deformation and handling method.

Measure every bottleneck on the route

Start at the unloading point. Check the entrance, lift door, lift car, stairs, landings, apartment door, hall, internal doors, and final room. Record clear width, clear height, and the space before and after every turn. Handles, closers, skirting, handrails, and projecting lights all reduce the useful opening.

A lift door width is not enough. A long item must enter, rotate, and often stand at an angle inside the car. The internal diagonal, ceiling, handrail, and return wall can be the controlling dimensions.

Use diagonals only as an initial screen

Tilting a rectangular item may allow a larger cross-section through an opening, but a diagonal comparison is not proof. The object sweeps through a larger volume as it rotates. If the doorway sits tight to a corner, there may be no place to achieve the required angle.

Prototype the difficult turn

For flat items such as headboards and table tops, cut a cardboard rectangle at the controlling cross-section and walk the route. For bulky items, use taped boxes or adjustable poles to mark the critical envelope. The mock-up does not need to reproduce every curve; it must preserve the dimensions that cannot bend.

Have a second person watch the top and rear clearances. Record where the mock-up collides and at what angle. Send the route dimensions and photos to the retailer or delivery team before the item is dispatched.

Do not turn a near miss into a safety plan

A few millimetres of theoretical clearance is not a sensible basis for forcing a heavy object through finished walls. Damage to floors, fire doors, common areas, or the item itself can cost more than selecting another size.

Heavy, long, fragile, or externally hoisted items require a professional plan, appropriate protection, and confirmation of building rules. A dimension calculator cannot assess weight distribution, manual handling, or lifting safety.
