Curtain measurements: track, fullness, and finished drop

Choose the fixing method first

Ceiling tracks, wall-mounted tracks, and poles begin from different reference points. A ceiling track needs a suitable fixing zone; a wall-mounted system must clear handles, cabinets, and the window swing. Measuring only the window opening and choosing the hardware later changes both width and drop.

Sketch the opening, sill, heater, air-conditioning unit, and adjacent furniture. Decide whether the treatment spans the whole wall or only the opening. Full-wall curtains improve light control but consume stacking space at each side.

Keep four widths separate

The opening width is the building aperture. The track width is the installed hardware. The finished curtain width is the fabric laid flat. Fullness describes the ratio between flat fabric and track length. A 2 m track at two-times fullness needs about 4 m of finished curtain width before allowances for hems and construction.

For a centre opening, divide the total width between the two panels and confirm the overlap. Unequal wall space may justify unequal stacking positions even when the two panels remain the same finished size.

Measure the drop in three places

Measure from the planned fixing point to the intended hem position at the left, centre, and right. Floors and ceilings are not always level. A finished drop cannot be chosen safely from one central reading or from the top of the window frame.

Track gliders, hooks, headings, and poles all change where the fabric begins. The maker should convert your installed hardware dimension into the final cutting dimension. For floor-length curtains, decide the intended clearance according to cleaning and movement rather than relying on a universal number.

Allow for the stack

Open curtains form a stack at one or both sides. Heavy cloth, high fullness, and double layers increase that stack. If the window is tight to a cabinet or return wall, the stack can obstruct a door or reduce the clear glass area.

A recess for double tracks needs enough width, depth, and maintenance access to stop the layers rubbing. Motorised tracks also need power, motor space, and a route for later removal.

Send a complete record to the maker

Provide the fixing method, track length, side returns, three drops, opening direction, heading type, and number of fabric layers, together with a straight-on photograph. A message that says only 'window width 1.8 m' leaves most of the design unresolved.

High-level fixing, curved tracks, very long spans, and motorised systems should be surveyed by the installer. This guide helps you prepare and review the information; it does not determine the capacity of the wall or ceiling fixing.
